Planning to travel carry-on only? Smart move — but Canada's airlines don't all play by the same rules. Before you pack, here's exactly what fits in the overhead bin on every major Canadian carrier in 2026.

Canadian Airline Carry-On Size Rules at a Glance

Airline Max Dimensions Weight Limit (Economy) Personal Item Allowed?
Air Canada 23 × 40 × 55 cm (9 × 16 × 22 in) 10 kg Yes
Air Canada Rouge 23 × 40 × 55 cm (9 × 16 × 22 in) 10 kg Yes
WestJet 23 × 40 × 55 cm (9 × 16 × 22 in) 10 kg (Economy) / No limit (Premium) Yes
WestJet Encore 23 × 40 × 55 cm (9 × 16 × 22 in) 10 kg Yes
Porter Airlines 23 × 40 × 55 cm (9 × 16 × 22 in) 9 kg Yes
Flair Airlines 35 × 20 × 42 cm (14 × 8 × 16.5 in) 7 kg Yes (fee applies)
Lynx Air 23 × 35 × 56 cm (9 × 14 × 22 in) 7 kg Yes (fee applies)

Tip: Always measure your bag with wheels and handles included — airlines do. And note that Flair and Lynx have significantly smaller allowances than the major carriers.

Does a 22-Inch Carry-On Fit on Canadian Airlines?

Yes — a standard 22-inch carry-on fits on Air Canada, WestJet, and Porter without any issues. The 22 × 14 × 9 inch format (the US TSA standard) falls within all three carriers' overhead bin limits.

The exception is Flair and Lynx. Their dimensions are noticeably smaller, so a standard 22-inch bag will likely need to be gate-checked on those airlines — often for a fee.

Hardside vs Softside for Canadian Travel

Canadian winters add a wrinkle to the hardside vs softside debate that most luggage guides ignore.

Hardside (polycarbonate shell) is popular for its clean look and scratch resistance, but polycarbonate becomes more brittle in temperatures below -20°C. If your bag is sitting on a tarmac in Winnipeg in January, the corners and hinges are the most vulnerable points. This is something we see at our repair counter regularly — cold-cracked polycarbonate from winter tarmac exposure.

Softside bags flex under compression, which makes them more forgiving when overhead bins are full and staff need to force your bag in. They also tend to weigh slightly less, which matters when WestJet Premium is the only cabin with no carry-on weight limit.

Our recommendation for Canadian travellers: softside for frequent domestic flying, hardside for international trips where you control the conditions more.

TSA Locks for US-Connecting Flights Out of YYZ

If you're flying through Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to a US destination, your carry-on will go through CATSA screening in Canada and may be subject to TSA inspection on the US side. TSA-approved locks (look for the red diamond logo) can be opened by security without cutting the lock. Standard locks will be cut off if agents need access.

All carry-on luggage from Samsonite, Briggs & Riley, and Pacsafe sold at Luggage City comes with TSA-approved locks included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Air Canada weigh carry-on bags?
Air Canada's official limit is 10 kg, but gate agents rarely weigh carry-ons unless the bag looks visibly oversized or the flight is heavily loaded. That said, the limit is enforced on busy routes — especially during the holiday season and summer peaks. Staying under 10 kg is always the safe call.

Is a 22-inch carry-on allowed in Canada?
Yes — a 22-inch carry-on is within the size limits for Air Canada, WestJet, and Porter. It will not fit Flair or Lynx without potentially being gate-checked.

What carry-on size works for all Canadian airlines?
If you want one bag that works across every Canadian carrier including Flair and Lynx, look for something around 35 × 20 × 42 cm (14 × 8 × 16.5 in) or smaller. Most 20-inch cabin bags meet this threshold.

Can I bring a personal item in addition to my carry-on?
Yes — all major Canadian airlines allow one carry-on plus one personal item (laptop bag, purse, or small backpack). Flair charges a fee for the personal item on some fare types.

What happens if my carry-on is overweight at the gate?
You'll typically be asked to pay a checked bag fee on the spot — usually $35–$65 depending on the airline and route. On full flights, agents are more likely to enforce weight limits.

How do I keep my carry-on under the weight limit?
Use a handheld luggage scale before you leave home (we carry them in-store). Packing cubes help compress clothing and keep weight organized. Wearing your heaviest items (boots, jacket, sweater) through the airport is the oldest trick in the book and it still works.

Does Porter Airlines weigh carry-ons?
Porter is generally consistent about enforcing its 9 kg limit, particularly on the Dash 8 turboprop aircraft used on shorter regional routes where overhead bin space is tighter.

Are hardside or softside carry-ons better for Canadian winters?
Softside for frequent Canadian domestic flying — they're more forgiving on cold tarmacs and compress better in tight overhead bins. Hardside for international travel where you control the environment more.
